Man, how did I miss that fic? It is everything I ever dreamed. In the post it’s based on I limited sight to the eyes out of the vague idea that the ectoplasm would be mimicking biological mechanisms… but not all ghosts are imprints of dead creatures and this is so much cooler. Definitely the eyes are more specialized tho. //Depth perception and the like in the fic. Eee.

XD I know sight is the most likely given how the human brain is wired but I wonder how creatures like sharks and such perceive the electromagnetic fields they pick up, and if it’s similar, and how it differs by wavelength. In particular the ‘canals and pockets filled with special jelly’ aspect as I read this intrigues greatly, because it seems similar to filaments.

I also had an entire conversation with whatdoesthefauxsay about ‘taste’ and now the image of Danny trying to surreptitiously lick the air like a snake is not leaving me. As well as his tongue changing in ghost form to something longer and more prehensile as a result. Tucker accidentally hits him in the face with a stick after asking if Danny can hold things with it, it’s great.

Speaking of, shapeshifting! Shapeshiftiiiiing. Oh man you quoted me I feel so happy. But man shapeshifting of individual cells could be interesting as hell. And you’re right: so much bodyhorror potential~. He’d need to have some really good signal coordination going for things to not end up a horrific mess.

I was talking with Ivyvine6 about the effects of an ecto/biological interface and tossed this spitball about healing works. Part of me is constantly flipflopping about how halfa transformation works; portal rings or ectoplasm withdrawing and sequestration, and this uses the latter as a base:

It’s possible that when cells burst due to injury, they release the ectoplasm in them, which arranges itself in the site of injury according to the template of how he ‘should’ be encoded in his ectosignature, which acts as a scaffold for the actual healing to take place.”

Also speaking of healing, during the above convo we also talked about the ectoplasm coating his DNA altering gene expression. All somatic cells in the body share the same genes despite divers function, so what if it’s possible that the ectoplasm is able to ‘reset’ cells in sites of injury to stem cells and guide their growth and redifferentiation? That would greatly aid healing, and in particular he’d never have to worry about spinal or neural injury. Sure, the patterns laid down in the replaced neurons would likely be lost, which could lead to problems, but still.

Which would greatly contribute to the neuroplasticity. Good call, I totally didn’t think of that, or at least had more fun thinking about the period before adjustment because let’s face it, torturing Danny is fun. I wonder if he’d make up his own words for some of the colours, or use the ghost ones? And you’re right about experience being subjective. Human eyesight and colour perception varies, it makes sense that ghost’s can too, unless I misinterpreted. //Apparently there’s a word for this: ‘umvelt’.) Oooh and good point about Vlad I can see Danny teasing him to this effect.

Ha, I’m reminded of a fic that I wish I could remember the name of that I think was partly from Jazz’s POV, about Danny being suddenly terrified of the microwave after the accident and trying to hide it. I don’t think that much microwave radiation actually leaks out from the machine, but it’s still fun to think about. And I love him being bombarded with all the radio waves etc everywhere so much.

Just hide in the basement Danny. It’ll be okay.
