Dub Difference Jack & Omi in The Apprentice Showdown

Again another dub difference especially I’m eyeing on Jack & Omi’s interaction (my second platonic OTP), and I’ll list down the differences below with the translated dub from Chinese.

On the final part of Showdown where Jack asked Omi if he really believed he would turned good or it was something to just prove to his friends wrong:

image

English dub: I believed you and you disappointed me… Deeply…
Chinese dub: 我是真的相信你,但是你让我伤透心了… (Translation: I really believe you, but you broke my heart…)

image

English dub: Really? Well, you shouldn’t have!
Chinese dub: 真的?别浪费眼泪了 (Translation: Really? Don’t waste your tears!)

English dub: I was planning to turn on you all along!
Chinese dub: 我本来就没有打算要投靠你呀 (Translation: I didn’t intend to seek help/seek refuge/rely* on you.

English dub: You lied, you did try.
Chinese dub: 你骗人,你是真心的 (Translation: You lied, you’re sincere about it!)

In the Chinese dub, there’s also additional fact that Jack fears of failing and to him, there’s no way to become good at all. And he was sincere deep inside in searching for help or relying on someone to become good or strong. And Omi was the one who would sincerely wanted to help him; but his lack of confidence and fear in failing destroy those chance.

* = This one is debatable by what Jack is implying. Did he really want help to become a good person? Save himself from the heylin ways or his fears or failing? Or also he needed someone to rely on to become good?

Just a trivial thing, but I’ve always wondered what the balloons say in this scene? Obviously i mean, I’m sure two of them say something along the lines of ‘true’ and ‘false’ but what does the third one say?

PLEASE translate more of these in future. It’s so interesting to compare dubs, especially the Chinese and English ones (considering the influence of the series). Dude. Trivia like this is what I live for!
Well done.

@bonzly-says: Sure, I’ll do more of them in the future 🙂
If you have any specific scene you want me to pick up on, just drop me a message 😀
But I won’t be able to ensure the accuracy for third season, since there’s no subtitles and hard to tell which chinese character were they saying ^^;

As for the balloons “是” and “不” would be your true and false in the showdown. But for the third one would be “中”, in literal translation is middle. By right, it may be saying that what the opponent pointed out of you may can be both true and lie at the same time… Or you’re neutral of the whole entire thing that was pointed out.

But however, it also can be interpreted from google translation of this verb being used and the particular scene when Omi pointed out how he stole the shen gong wu he failed at good just as he failed as evil:

image

English Dub: Did you steal the Shen Gong Wu because you feel you would failed at good, just as you would failed at evil?
Chinese Dub: 你把聖功武偷走,难道因为怕自己失败没辦法當好人吗?(Translation: You stole the Shen Gong Wu, is it because of fear of your own failure and having no way to become a good person?)

image

English Dub: Jack Spicer, fail? Lie!
Chinese Dub: 截使者,怕失败?鬼扯,说谎 (Translation: Jack Spicer, fear of failure? Bullshit, you’re lying!)

image

English Dub: No, truth, truth and more truth!
Chinese Dub: 不,是真的,是真的,一定是真的 (No, it’s true, it is true, it is certainly true!)

^The dub difference above in italics are what I’m explaning on.

As when Omi points out Jack’s own fear failing of being good, Jack tries to deny especially he denies it hard in the Chinese Dub. Around the word when Omi says more truth or it is certainly true, the balloon reaches “中” and pops.

This completely implying from the google translation, and actually most people had noticed it…

Omi hit the mark completely that Jack is actually scared of failing, fear that he would failed so much at good as he failed as evil. And near the end, Omi pointed out that he did try to become good? It was the truth he was trying but his own fear of failing made him resorted back to the Heylin side.

So that’s the purpose of

“中” in the Showdown is when you hit the mark of your target that he’s trying to lie very hard on it.

I hope my explanation helps, and sorry for this long post ^^;
