If you know anybody who’s published a book,
Don’t ask for a free copy
Don’t ask for a free copy
Don’t ask for a free copy
To follow up:
Although you might ask with good intentions, to an author, it feels as if you don’t believe the book is worth the financial investment. Writers put a lot of time and effort into their stories. They should not be expected to dish out free copies, especially if you weren’t even a beta reader.
Also:
If you did get a free copy because the author specifically gave it to you, consider buying a copy for someone in your friends/family.
This is more important than buying another copy for yourself because it might create a new fan who will buy the author’s future books and/or tell their own friends and family about the author!
Other things you can do to support authors:
- Carry the book with you places so strangers see you with/reading them.
- Tell your friends and family you enjoyed the book.
- Post pictures on your social media that include the book in clear view.
- Write genuine reviews of the book on goodreads and amazon.
- (If you can) request the book from your local library.
- (If you can) draw fanart or write short bits of fic for the book.
- Rant about how awesome the book is in fandom spaces.
