If you know anybody who’s published a book,

Don’t ask for a free copy

Don’t ask for a free copy

Don’t ask for a free copy

To follow up:

Although you might ask with good intentions, to an author, it feels as if you don’t believe the book is worth the financial investment. Writers put a lot of time and effort into their stories. They should not be expected to dish out free copies, especially if you weren’t even a beta reader.

Also:

If you did get a free copy because the author specifically gave it to you, consider buying a copy for someone in your friends/family.

This is more important than buying another copy for yourself because it might create a new fan who will buy the author’s future books and/or tell their own friends and family about the author!

Other things you can do to support authors:

  1. Carry the book with you places so strangers see you with/reading them.
  2. Tell your friends and family you enjoyed the book.
  3. Post pictures on your social media that include the book in clear view.
  4. Write genuine reviews of the book on goodreads and amazon.
  5. (If you can) request the book from your local library.
  6. (If you can) draw fanart or write short bits of fic for the book.
  7. Rant about how awesome the book is in fandom spaces.
